Beetroot juice is the Weirwolf’s secret weapon!

Chatting backstage with Boris Johnson, David Weir, the four-time olympic medal-winner, let slip the boost he had to go on and win the men’s marathon. “I had a shot of beetroot juice,” he told the Mayor, “and that made all the difference”.

Scientists in the USA have discovered athletes who eat baked beetroot before a race run put in a faster time. Beetroot contains high levels of nitrates, which have been shown to boost exercise performance. Researchers at St Louis University found athletes were able to run five kilometres faster after eating beetroot than after eating cranberries.

It follows other studies that have shown beetroot juice can increase stamina and make muscles more efficient.

In the UK, researchers at the University of Exeter found that the nitrate contained in beetroot leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake, making exercise less tiring. The researchers believe their findings could also help people with cardiovascular, respiratory or metabolic diseases, as well as endurance athletes. Beetroot juice has previously been shown to help reduce blood pressure.
